Leccino:
Leccino Improved: Origin - Tuscany Italy c1995
The Fruit:
One of the main oil producing semi-dwarf varieties in
Tuscany. Well known for the quality and character of the oil it produces. Fruit
shape is oval and medium sized, similar to Frantoio. Oil content and yield is
high. The oil is superbly balanced and palatable fresh of the press with out the
harsh bitterness associated with some oils. The fruit ripens from the tip end
first and early in season. This allows the fruit to be picked early without loss
of yield.
Agronomic
Characteristics:
Leccino is highly productive, with a compact fruit ripening period. The tree
resists low temperatures, wind, fog, olive knot, and fungals, especially
'Peacock Spot'. Foliage is silver green, leaf size is medium small. The trees
growth habit is upright and is very suitable to machine
harvesting. Has low quality pollen so must have companion olives to
ensure fruit set. In Tuscany it is usually planted with Frantoio and Pendolino.
Comments:
This variety is successfully established in many countries including Argentina,
Israel and New Zealand. It is one of the most hardy of all the commercial
cultivars in the world. The mother stock was imported from
the University of Italy in 1995. We won the Silver Medal at the 1999 Olive Oil
Awards with pure varietal Olive Oil from these mother stock
