The Fruit:
Frantoio is one of, if not the main variety in Tuscany. Frantoio produces
exceptionally high quality olive oil that is highly regarded around the world.
The oil is well balanced and fruity. The fruit is oval shaped of medium size
being similar to Leccino. Oil yield is high. The fruit ripens late in the
season.
Agronomic
Characteristics:
Frantoio is highly productive with consistently heavy yields. Not as resistant
to low temperatures as Leccino. Foliage is a deep green colour. The trees growth
habit is open and has medium vigour. Frantoio has good quality pollen but
benefits from companion planting to maximise production. In Tuscany it is
usually planted with Leccino and Pendolino. Suited to mechanical harvesting.
Comments:
This variety is established in more countries than any other. Frantoio is the
worlds best known oil producing olive and well renowned for the flavour of oil
that it produces. The mother stock was imported from the
University of Italy in 1995.
